The Congregant of the Year Award, named in loving memory of Ernest Krautkopf, a long time Emanu El member and a devoted volunteer, is given to honor his commitment to Emanu El, the Jewish community, and to Judaism. Congregants honored as the Congregant of the Year share similar values – leadership, community and synagogue involvement, and a love of Judaism.
This year’s Congregant of the Year is Scott Bormaster.
About Scott
Scott is a lifelong member of Congregation Emanu El. He is the son of Martha and Leon Bormaster who were members since the 1960’s. Both Scott and his family have been active members for generations. Scott has served Emanu El in multiple roles since the mid-1990’s, including serving on the Board of Trustees, the Endowment Fund Board as well as holding major rolls related to the growth of Mitzvah Day and the relationship between the Congregation and the Houston Food Bank. He also served as the Committee Chair leading the Endowment Fund Marketing Series that educated the Congregation highlighting the various Funds and their creators through monthly articles in the Temple Bulletin. Scott currently is Chair of the Volunteer Committee Coordination Group helping members “Get Involved” in the Congregation.
Professionally, Scott has been in the Oil Marketing and Transportation business for 45 years and has owned INC Nautical, L.P. for the last 20 years. Scott’s experience in managing oil businesses within Corporations and on his own have led to his success in building, investing and operating companies that market and transport commodities the most efficient and economical way. He received a B.A. in Biology and Psychology from The University of Texas at Austin.
Scott and his wife, Leslie are the proud parents of Brian (43), Alli (40), and twins Kelly and Kim (38) and have 8 grandchildren. In his spare time, Scott plays golf, goes to sporting events with his grandkids, enjoys coaching his grandsons’ baseball teams, and spending as much time as possible with his only granddaughter. Scott is currently on the Board of the Carl McCain Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises money for people in the Oil & Gas industry that have financial hardship due to catastrophic or specific medical needs. He just finished his two years as Chair of the Foundation where they set a record distributing money to Aid recipients in a single year close to $1mm.
